“Humans never happened.” Odd, but true in the vivid and imperfect world of Zootopia.
Fast forward to March 4th, 2016! Popcorn in hand! Zootopia, Disney’s 55th animated feature will hit big screens nationwide. For many who are wondering what the rave is all about – think Idris Elba, who plays Chief Bogo, a beastly police officer who protects the animal metropolis of Zootopia.
Okay, there is actually way more layers to Zootopia than the British film icon Idris! Since we are talking characters, there is also the adorable, yet naive at times beautiful bunny, Judy Hopps, played by Ginnifer Goodwin and the sly, slick and shady fox Nick Wilde, played by Jason Bateman. Sidebar: After watching Zootopia, you will probably know a person or two that reminds you of Mr. Wilde. Watch their every move.
Let’s rewind a bit…A few weeks ago, I flew out to Burbank, Los Angeles, CA to attend the early lead press tour of Zootopia with a few blogger friends. The mission – to go behind the scenes with the Walt Disney Animation team to get insight into the crafty development and solid execution of this amazingly funny, yet meaningful story about animals in a dynamic, yet imperfect world.
Although I didn’t see the film in its entirety, based on the rough sketches and Q+A with the producers and directors, my reaction is: Zootopia is a breathtaking animation which truly humanizes the hilarious animals. The film vividly touches upon a variety of emotions, including persistence and determination. – Kay K.

The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when rookie Officer Judy Hopps (voice of Ginnifer Goodwin) arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde (voice of Jason Bateman), to solve the mystery. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Zootopia,” a comedy-adventure directed by Byron Howard (“Tangled,” “Bolt”) and Rich Moore (“Wreck-It Ralph,” “The Simpsons”) and co-directed by Jared Bush (“Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero”), opens in theaters on March 4, 2016.
